The Art & Science of Gift Giving: How to Choose Meaningful Gifts

I consider myself a good gift giver. I'm always surprised when people say they are "no good at it." What makes it come naturally for some people and not for others?

Research suggests that many gift givers tend to focus on their own wishes about a gift—choosing gag gifts or things that earn social approval—instead of selecting something that truly suits the recipient. Others get lost in the endless options. The key is to focus on what the recipient prefers.

Considering the Recipient’s Preferences

Think about their interests, hobbies, and style when choosing a gift.

  • Hobbies & Free Time: For example, do they enjoy making art, attending sports events, or gardening? Maybe art supplies, sporting event tickets, or gardening items would suit them.

  • Style: Do they lean toward a minimalist look, or do they prefer a cozy, homey vibe? A sleek serving plate or cozy blanket might fit the bill.

  • What makes them happy? A favorite book or collectible might be just right.

Experiences Count

One of the best things about giving experience gifts is that they can strengthen relationships by spending time together. The downside is that gift cards or vouchers often go unused or can be forgotten. If the gift is an activity you are doing together, be sure to schedule the date right after you give the gift to make sure it happens.

Wish Lists Work

Does the person you are shopping for have a gift suggestion or a wish list? We tend to think this is unoriginal, but research indicates that people overestimate how important the element of surprise is. Recipients tend to like the things they request better.

Wrap It Artfully
Presentation elevates even the simplest gift. A handwritten note, a pretty bag, or artful wrapping shows that you put some thought into the gift. My parents are generous gift givers and amazing gift wrappers, and I’ve learned from them that a beautiful package adds a special touch. For the holidays, you can even add natural decor like holly branches or pinecones.
