Leaning into Second Winter
Share
Winter has two distinct parts, the early season of holidays and the quieter second season of January, February, and early March—a time that feels less sparkly and well defined. The days are cold and short, often filled with more routine tasks and activities.
In Ancient calendars, the new year began around March 21st, with the spring equinox. The calendar was only ten months long, with literally no names for the months we now call January and February. It was considered a time when the world was dormant.
Yet here we are in the modern world, going about our days as if it is any other season. When the world outside looks bleak, we have to learn how to comfort ourselves from within.
Winter is a time where we need to add in a little extra comfort and care for ourselves. Over the years, I've added a few winter rituals to do just that.
Load up on blankets - In my family, we can't seem to have enough of these! Find a soft and cozy one (or more) in your favorite color or texture.
Go for the warm drinks - Enjoy your favorite coffee, tea or hot cocoa throughout the day. Our bodies love the extra warmth in the cold months. Sipping hot water with lemon and honey is soothing in the evening and helps fend off colds.
Make some comfort food - Get out your cookbooks or enjoy a favorite family recipe. Soups, stews, and pastas come to mind. Homemade bread is also amazing, and makes the house smell so good.
Journal - Write a page or two to clear your mind and consider what you want in the coming season. Consider a hobby or interest you might like to explore. A sense of novelty fuels creativity and brightens winter days.
Clear a space - Do a gentle reset in your home, clearing space for what's ahead.
Embrace the light. Winter has it's own beauty. As we dwell in the second half, we can see the light start to shift later and enjoy those slow quiet moments as the sun goes down.
