Artist Studios - Home or Away?
Share
I used to fantasize about having my own art studio away from home, free of distractions (just me and my art supplies!) It didn't make sense financially, and I knew I probably wouldn't get there every day even once my kids started school full time. But a girl can dream, right?
I'm fortunate to have a home studio (aka: small bedroom) where I work on my art and my art business. It's carpeted, has multiple desks for art supplies, lots of canvases leaning against the wall, and a large window. Not too shabby, given that many artists work from a corner of their dining room! I used to long for full days interruption free, but in this day and age, that's just not real life! Plus, I've come to see that I work best in small chunks of time on a regular basis.
In my home studio I love the comfy hand-me down upholstered chair I curl up in when I'm reading, and my electric tea kettle that's always ready downstairs. With no commute, I can sneak in after dinner and edit a photo or gaze at a painting in progress to consider what's next. So for me, for now, integrating my art studio with home life is the way to do it.
We dream of the perfect time, the perfect place to be at our creative best, when in reality it is taking small steps consistently that keeps you on the path.
What do you prefer, a studio at home or away?
